Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Gianni lives in Sicily with his mother Lina and his stepfather Franco, who repairs mopeds and abuses him. After he is caught with another boy, the town turns on him. Sent to deliver a moped, he rejects Turi's advances and escapes an assault, and Turi and Emmanuele pursue him on their mopeds. He crashes into a moped that sixteen-year-old Nino has just been given for his birthday, and Nino revives him. A fireworks display leads Gianni to the Scalia house, where he apologizes for the accident and asks Nino's father for work. Alfredo, who believes Nino caused the crash, invites him to lunch; Gianni tells them his father is working in Germany, and he is offered a place at Alfredo's brother's quarry. Gianni settles into Nino's days and saves to free himself and Lina from Franco.
