Plot summary
In August 1967, five young men begin recruit training in San Diego. Dave Bisbee, a draft dodger, arrives in the custody of FBI agents. Alvin Foster, from Emporia, Kansas, keeps a journal and hopes for a post as a combat correspondent. Tyrone Washington comes from Chicago, Billy Ray Pike from Galveston, where he has left a pregnant girlfriend, and Vinnie Fazio from Brooklyn. Sergeants Loyce and Aquilla put the recruits through harsh physical training. The five later serve together in Vietnam, where mortar fire, officers who count bodies, and the corruption of their South Vietnamese ally greet them.
