Plot summary
In 1920s New Jersey, sisters Bessie and Josephine Cavallo live with their grandfather and paint watch dials at the American Radium factory. Walt, a young photographer and communist, comes to the plant to take pictures of the women at work, and he and Bessie grow close; he draws her into his political circles and sends her to Wiley, who leads the Consumer's League of New Jersey. When Jo falls ill, the foreman, Mr. Roeder, sends the company doctor, Dr. Flint, who finds nothing wrong with her. After the sisters ask for more tests, he reports that she has syphilis, the same diagnosis given to their eldest sister, Mary, before her death two years earlier. Jo is a virgin, and the sisters refuse to accept it. They ask Wiley for help, and she agrees to take on American Radium.
