Plot summary
Danny and Beth arrange to hand Toulon's puppets over to Captain Brooks for use by the American military, but a Nazi spy posing as Brooks reaches the meeting first, and the real Brooks arrives to find both of them shot. Fatally wounded, Beth begs him to look after the puppets. Brooks brings them to his superior, Captain Kip Hansard, who knows the Nazis have turned to the occult to animate puppets of their own. Hansard orders Brooks to join a circle of psychics run by Doctor Ivan Ivanov and work out what gives Toulon's puppets life, so that the same power can serve the American war effort. Brooks resents taking orders from Ivan and doubts that the puppets are alive or that psychic powers exist.
