Plot summary
In Paris, Thierry works as an estate agent and shares a flat with his much younger sister Gaëlle, who answers personal advertisements and waits in cafés to meet strangers. He is trying to find an apartment for Nicole and Dan, a couple whose relationship is unraveling. Dan was dismissed from the army and now spends his days in a bar, telling his troubles to Lionel, the patient barman whose father, Arthur, lies bed-ridden at home. Charlotte, Thierry's colleague, is a devout Christian who gives him an evangelical television program on video and spends her evenings caring for the foul-mouthed Arthur.

- For his second Alan Ayckbourn adaptation, after Smoking/No Smoking, Alain Resnais kept the play's structure but moved the setting from provincial England to the 13th arrondissement of Paris, contrary to his usual preference.
- The film is built from over 50 short scenes, usually with two characters, linked by dissolves of falling snow, a device Resnais had used before in L'Amour à mort.
