Plot summary
With no job and no money, Ali brings his young son Sam from Belgium to Antibes and moves into his sister Anna's flat. He finds work as a nightclub bouncer and trains as a kickboxer during the day. One evening he meets Stéphanie after she is hurt in a brawl at the club, and he walks her home, learning that she trains killer whales at Marineland. He gives her his phone number. A security job follows, and a co-worker named Martial tells him about illegal bouts where he can earn money. Stéphanie then has an accident during a show at Marineland and wakes in the hospital to find her legs have been amputated. Depressed in her wheelchair, she calls Ali, who visits and takes her to a beach.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Rust and Bone (2012)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The special effects for Stéphanie's amputated legs were supplied by the French company Mikros Image: Marion Cotillard wore green knee-length socks so the legs below her knees could be erased by computer or replaced with images of prosthetic lower legs.
- To prepare to play an orca trainer, Marion Cotillard took swimming lessons and spent a week at Marineland learning how to direct whales.
- At the first costume fitting, Marion Cotillard folded her legs into the wheelchair and tried on pants left empty below them, an image she said was so powerful the film kept it throughout.
