Plot summary
Cyd Loughlin is headstrong and plays soccer for her high school in Columbia, South Carolina. She is eager to get away from life with her father, and she takes up an aunt's offer of a few weeks in Chicago. Her aunt, Miranda Ruth, writes religious fiction. The two are awkward together at first, then grow easier over meals, walks and days in the sun. Cyd explores her sexuality over the summer, drawn to Katie, a neighborhood barista, and to Ridley, a boy from the area. Miranda and her colleague Anthony have feelings for one another, and neither will make the first move. Cyd privately suggests that each of them ask the other out.
