Plot summary
Millions of years ago the Red Ranger Zordon and his team guarded the Zeo Crystal, until the Green Ranger, Rita Repulsa, tried to seize its power for herself. Zordon hid five Power Coins and brought down a meteor that sent her to the sea floor and left him without a body of his own. Today in Angel Grove, quarterback Jason Scott is thrown off his team and confined at home after a prank. In detention he meets Billy Cranston and Kimberly Hart, and Billy's explosives at an abandoned gold mine draw in Trini Kwan and Zack Taylor. The five claim the Power Coins and wake Monday with superhuman abilities. Rita wakes, and the teenagers find an ancient ship where Alpha 5 and Zordon's consciousness warn that she has less than two weeks to find the Crystal.

- The five surviving actors who played the Rangers in the original TV series attended the 2017 film's Los Angeles premiere on March 22, 2017, the first time they had been together publicly since 1995; actress Thuy Trang had died in 2001.
- Power Rangers was meant to launch a series with multiple sequels, but all the plans were canceled after its commercial failure, leading Saban to sell the franchise rights to Hasbro.
- Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were hired to write the film, but their script was rejected, and another draft, proposed by Max Landis, was also turned down because the studio wanted a grittier tone.
