Plot summary

In 1920, during the Civil War, Crimea is on the eve of liberation from the White Guards. Valerka, a former schoolboy, Yashka, a gypsy, and the orphaned brother and sister Danka and Ksanka serve as Red scouts. Returning from a patrol, they knock down a White Guard airplane and take documents from the pilot's field bag that tell of defensive fortifications around the coastal city. A map of the fortifications is held by the White counter-intelligence officer Colonel Kudasov, and the four are given the task of getting it. They reach Yalta by fishing boat and disguise themselves: Danka works as a shoe-cleaner and Valerka poses as a young monarchist nobleman.
