Plot summary
Didar is a poet past forty who cannot live from his verse. He writes in the early mornings, then goes to his day job as an editor at a small newspaper that is barely getting by. Talk around him is of Kazakh culture losing ground, of dying languages, of English everywhere. At home his children sit with internet games and give their father little attention. His mother, who has come from her village for a week to see the grandchildren, is the one who tells him readers still exist. In a book about Makhambet Otemisuly, a 19th-century Kazakh poet who defied the authorities, Didar finds a figure he feels bound to. Then an invitation reaches him for a poetry evening in a town in the south of Kazakhstan.
