Plot summary
Winona lives with her parents, Pamela and Richard, in 1998 Los Angeles, and the three of them get along poorly. She has dropped out of college, works as her father's secretary, and spends her time with her friends Addie and Stephanie and her boyfriend Frank. On a night out, Frank leaves to get food and does not come back, and Winona considers being done with him. The group also runs into a crowd of young men, where Winona meets Ben. Pain under her arm that has lasted a month takes her to her pediatrician, Dr. Cotton, who thinks it may be an anxiety disorder and suggests therapy. Winona visits Dr. Monroe, and questions about her mother leave her in tears.
