Plot summary
Paul is sixteen when his father dies by suicide, and he goes to stay with his uncle's family. He arrives without any warning, confused and angsty, wanting love and support. Seen from the outside, the household looks like an intact middle-class family, and that appearance of harmony does not survive his visit. Anna, his uncle's wife, is unhappy with the life she leads there, and Robert, Paul's cousin, shares the house with them. Paul's arrival was not expected by any of them, and it brings a great tension among the three of them, most of it between Anna and Paul.
