Plot summary
Claire Paxton is a rebellious late teen repeating her senior classes at Arthur Meighen High School in Toronto during the regular year rather than spend a summer in summer school, and she has little motivation to attend or graduate. Her single mother drinks, and Claire gives her courses and her bingo hall job little of her attention; she fights with other girls. Jim, in his thirties, fronts the funk band the ElastoCitizens, and he and Claire begin a sexual relationship. Henry is a ninth grader she used to babysit, a strong student starting to rebel against his strict upbringing. Claire mentors him as he comes of age.
