Plot summary
Benny King is a self-conscious teenager in Bakersfield, California, whose father Carl wants him to get a summer job at a hamburger restaurant instead of spending the days writing and dreaming at home. Benny takes the job but keeps daydreaming about Candace. His friend Durrel Jackson has a different plan: the beaches of Southern California. With the family away on vacation, Benny takes his father's Mercedes convertible and the two drive to Malibu. They mean to sell sunglasses on the sand so Benny can pay for a poetry class. Durrel gets distracted by the women around them, while Benny doubts anyone will look past his size.
