Plot summary
Master thief Lupin III and his partner Daisuke Jigen leave the Monte Carlo Casino with a fortune, then discover the bills are expertly made counterfeits. Lupin decides the forgery operation is worth finding, and the pair travel to the Grand Duchy of Cagliostro, the small nation rumored to be the source of the fake money. On the road, a young woman in a wedding gown flees armed thugs in a red car. Lupin and Jigen step in, but she is taken. She leaves Lupin a signet ring, and he recognizes it: the woman is Clarisse, princess of Cagliostro, who is being forced to marry Count Cagliostro, the country's regent. The Count needs her ring, and his own, to claim the fabled treasure of Cagliostro.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro was the first anime with stereo sound; in 1980 all anime series changed to mono to stereo.
- The Castle of Cagliostro surpassed Space Battleship Yamato (1977) to become the most expensive anime film up until then; its record was later matched by Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) and surpassed by Royal Space Force (1987).
- Due to copyright issues with Maurice Leblanc's estate, the English adaptation renamed Lupin to 'Wolf', and Inspector Koichi Zenigata was mistakenly called 'Keibu Zenigata'.
- Animation on The Castle of Cagliostro began in July 1979 with only a quarter of the storyboards finished; Hayao Miyazaki had to complete them during animation, and the production had only five months.
- The staff added personal touches: Lupin's Fiat 500 was head animator Yasuo Ōtsuka's own car, and Clarisse's chase-scene Citroën 2CV was Hayao Miyazaki's first car.
- Disney's The Great Mouse Detective (1986), co-directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, paid homage to Cagliostro in its Big Ben climax; that two-minute CGI scene made it the first Disney film to extensively use computer animation and helped pave the way for the Disney Renaissance.
- Pixar co-founder John Lasseter was deeply influenced by Cagliostro; in October 2014 he gave a Tokyo International Film Festival keynote about how seeing a clip from it began Miyazaki's influence on his life and work.
- Before the film was available in North America, its footage was used in the 1983 arcade game Cliff Hanger, which appeared on the game show Starcade and in The Goonies (1985).
