Plot summary
Eight years have passed since Lady Russell persuaded Anne Elliot to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, then a young naval officer of small fortune whom her family and friends thought unsuitable. Sir Walter Elliot, his debts mounting, leases the family estate, Kellynch Hall, to Admiral Croft, and departs for Bath with Elizabeth and the widowed Mrs Penelope Clay, leaving Anne to care for her ailing sister Mary. The Crofts arrive, and Anne learns that the admiral's wife is Wentworth's sister. Captain Wentworth is expected at Mary's for dinner. Louisa Musgrove, one of Mary's sisters-in-law, urges Anne to pursue him and then pursues him herself.
