Plot summary
Eight-year-old Bobby Fischer learns from his mother, Regina, a Soviet Jewish immigrant, that the FBI watches her over her support for Marxist revolution in America, and she coaches him on what to say if agents approach him. Chess absorbs him, and though Regina fears it has become an obsession, she brings him along to a club where adults play; the resident master there takes him as a student. He grows into the youngest grandmaster ever, with tantrums whenever anything distracts him. At a team tournament in Varna, Bulgaria, he concludes that Soviet grandmasters are agreeing to draws with the World Chess Federation's blessing, leaving a non-Soviet player no path to the championship, and he walks away from the tournament and from chess.
