Plot summary
Marie is a widow with two daughters in Provence; Marty is a literary agent in Manhattan. When Marie sleeps she dreams she is Marty, and when Marty sleeps she dreams she is Marie. Marty sees Dr. Peters, a New York psychiatrist who believes she is lonely and wants children to love. Marie sees Dr. Langer in France, who believes she wants a life less ordinary, and she confides in her older friend Jessie. Marty's work brings her together with Aaron, an accountant; they become friends and then lovers. Marie falls in love with William, a writer. Neither woman wants to describe the life she leads while asleep.
