Plot summary
Mary, a free-spirited young woman in New York City, has little income and fills her nights with clubs and house parties. Arrested over an illegal rave, she asks her godmother Judy for bail money, and to pay it back she takes a clerk's job at the library branch Judy manages. The work feels dull to her at first, and she would rather get to know Mustafa, a Lebanese street vendor who hopes to become a teacher. After she smokes a joint, she grows interested in the Dewey Decimal System, and the two begin a romance. Mary shares an apartment with her roommate Leo, a club DJ.
