Plot summary
The Merchants, a criminal organization, run what is left of America after an atomic disaster reduces the world to poverty. They force the scientist Dr. Paul Dean to create a parasite that feeds on its host, and when he escapes with it, the creature infects him. Dean moves from town to town, staying ahead of a Merchant named Wolf while he searches for a way to destroy the parasite. In a desert town he meets Patricia Welles, a young lemon grower who lives there, and a gang led by Ricus steals a silver canister that holds one of the parasites.
