Plot summary
Daniel and Kristi Rey live in Carlsbad with Ali, Daniel's daughter from an earlier marriage, and their infant son Hunter. A break-in leaves their house trashed, the only thing taken a necklace from Kristi's sister Katie, while Hunter's nursery is untouched. The family has a security company install cameras that record to a DVR. Martine, who keeps house and cares for the baby, senses evil spirits and burns sage, so Daniel lets her go. Kristi tells Katie she thinks the place is haunted, and the sisters recall being tormented by a demon as children. Daniel waves away her fears even as the footage shows odd events, and Ali starts looking into what the cameras capture.

- Paranormal Activity 2 started filming without a completed script; three weeks in, the footage was disastrous, so the studio shut down production and assembled a writers' room, then hired Christopher Landon and another writer to write half the film.
- Paranormal Activity 2 broke the record for the biggest midnight gross for an R-rated film with $6.3 million, beating the previous holder Watchmen by $4.6 million, and set the record for the biggest opening for a horror film.
- Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VI, was pulled from directing days after he was hired when Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate used a clause in his contract to make him direct Saw 3D instead, only two weeks before filming.
