Plot summary
In Algiers in 1997, terrorist groups seek an Islamic and archaic state, and women especially are oppressed: a campaign presses them to wear the burqa, and unveiled women are hunted in the streets. Nedjma, an eighteen-year-old student, is passionate about fashion design and goes out with her girlfriends; she refuses to let the war keep her from a normal life. As the social climate grows more conservative and the radicals set bans on women's bodies, clothing and presence in public space, she rejects those bans and decides to stage a fashion show on her campus, bringing the girls together to brave what is forbidden.
