Plot summary
Pang is a young panda in China, and Jielong, a dragon, is his best friend. When Jielong is kidnapped, Pang follows her from China to Africa, where the lion Malume rules over the animals. A boat run by Xing Xing, an orangutan merchant, carries him away from home into mountains, deserts and jungles full of creatures he has never seen, among them dancing ostriches and frightening kudus. On the way he meets Jojo, a talapoin monkey, and Niala, a spotted hyena whose family needs saving too. Pang is not an adventurous panda, but he sets out to free Jielong and to help Niala.

- Panda Bear in Africa grew out of a bedtime story that director Richard Claus and his Kenyan wife told their six-year-old daughter about African animals; the directors pitched the idea as a cross between The Lion King, Kung Fu Panda and The Jungle Book.
- Voice production was split so that Dutch actors of Chinese descent played the Asian animals and native South African talent played the African animals, for global marketability and local authenticity.
