Plot summary
During the German occupation of Poland, Leopold Socha and Szczepek Wróblewski work the sewers of Lwów and loot what they find. Above them, the ghetto's Jewish residents live under German SS men and Ukrainian police; trade and prostitution go on beneath its walls, and smugglers like Mundek Margulies work the gaps. In the tunnels, Ignacy Chiger offers Socha a watch and asks for help. Socha agrees, with hesitation, to shelter the Chiger family for payment, while Szczepek warns him against it. Paulina Chiger and Mundek Margulies are among those who shelter with the family. Socha says nothing about the arrangement to his wife, Wanda, and at a tavern he and Szczepek meet Bortnik of the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police.

SPOILER
Leopold Socha died on May 12, 1946, saving his daughter from the wheels of a speeding truck of the Red Army; at his funeral, someone said it was "God's punishment for helping Jews."- In Darkness's Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the 84th Academy Awards meant that it, alongside Canada's official nominee Monsieur Lazhar, became the first two films from Canada ever nominated in that Oscar category in the same year.
- Krystyna Chiger, the last survivor of the group hidden in the sewers, wrote the memoir The Girl in the Green Sweater (2008), but it was not a source for the film because director Agnieszka Holland was unaware of the book until after its release.
