Plot summary
Long after an ecological disaster made the surface uninhabitable, people live in an artificial colony below ground. Much of recorded history has been forgotten, and the surviving data is held in a vast archive, much of it corrupted. Ura, a member of the Archive Excavation Department, works long hours restoring the records and is fascinated by images of the lost world, especially the green he never sees around him. Riko, who works in the Analysis department, has lost her desire to know the past; she believes the records can bring only sadness and that some things are better left forgotten. A co-worker passes records to Ura for restoration. Ura often meets Riko after work on a dark stairway that climbs upward, and one day a record comes to him that carries sound.
