Plot summary
Demon lore says a demon needs hundreds of years to reach human form, and that a heart freely offered by a pure person can make it mortal. Xiao Wei, a fox demon, has spent five centuries in ice for breaking the demon code. Que'er, a bird demon, frees her, and the two search for a man willing to give up his heart. A boorish prince scoffs, so they take his heart anyway. Xiao Wei then uses her magic on a general who hides half his face behind a gold mask. She travels on to White City at the border, where Princess Jing tours the outpost commanded by General Huo Xin, the bodyguard she once loved and who turned her away. A monstrous bear mauled Jing's face in the forest; Huo came too late but killed it.
