Who is Sleeping in Silver Grey (2021) on Netflix

Plot summary

Cheng Die grows up in a household split between silence and noise. Her father is absent for her first ten years, her mother weeps, and her grandmother Yang Zipei, a name from the Shanghai French Concession, teaches her piano early. The piano becomes her escape. When her father comes back, the Confucian expectations at home harden, and Cheng Die answers them by chasing sensation instead of discipline. She takes work as a teacher of music, and an affair at the school wraps her name in shame and gossip. She is sent away from Dehai City to the remote mountains, to Linyuan Town, and from there she comes to an island where the people cannot speak and little is as it appears.
