Plot summary
Michael and Andy live in the same building, Andy one floor above, and are each other's closest company. Off work they make pizza, watch a kung fu movie they know by heart, work through jigsaw puzzles, and play a game of their own invention at an abandoned drive-in, hitting a ball toward a barrel. Michael comes back from two oncologists with the news that his cancer is terminal. He has no wish to grow very ill and die in a hospital bed, and through a support group he found a way to end his life by prescription. He asks Andy to be there with him. Andy tells him he should not give up; Michael says he only wants their days together to stay as they are. Andy agrees, and looks for the nearest pharmacy that can fill it.
