Plot summary
A reporter interviews Paan Singh Tomar, a notorious dacoit in the Chambal Valley, and Paan Singh recounts his life in flashback. In 1950 he is a soldier, and his wife and mother live in Morena, Madhya Pradesh. In training his endurance draws the notice of his superiors, and though athletics does not interest him, the sports division's unlimited rations bring him in. After training for the 5000-meter race, he is moved to the 3000-meter steeplechase and wins gold at the Indian National Games seven years in a row. At the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, unfamiliar track spikes cost him a medal. His brother then arrives with news that Bhanwar Singh, a relative, has taken over much of the family's ancestral land, so Paan Singh retires from the army and returns to Morena to settle the dispute.
