Plot summary
Lauren Ames is a refined but struggling actress who finally has the chance to study with the theater professor Stanislav Korzenowski. Sandy Brozinsky, brash and loud, also ends up in his class. The two women dislike each other from their first meeting. Neither knows that both are dating Michael Santers. When he is reported dead in an explosion, each refuses to believe it. They join forces to follow leads across the country and make him choose between them.

- Shelley Long signed first, with a contract guaranteeing her top billing, and Bette Midler would only sign once Long agreed to share it. During production the two names were alternated on press releases, and Midler received top billing on release prints east of the Mississippi River.
- The billing deal carried over to home video: LaserDiscs and tapes shipped to retailers in the west featured Shelley Long on the cover, while retailers in the east received discs featuring Bette Midler.
- Suzanne Somers has said Michael Eisner offered her a three-movie deal with Disney that included Outrageous Fortune, but she turned it down; she would have played Bette Midler's part.
