Plot summary
Melody Brooks is in sixth grade, has cerebral palsy and synesthesia, and remembers almost everything she sees. She cannot speak, so her thoughts reach her in the voice of the star of her favorite television show. Her father, Chuck, thinks she belongs in a better classroom than her special education class; her mother, Diane, has doubts. Dr. Katherine Ray offers a mainstreaming program that would put Melody in a regular class for part of each day, and Chuck persuades Diane to try it. In Mr. Dimming's class Melody finds rude comments from the teacher and the students, and Rose Spencer is the only classmate who speaks to her directly.
