Plot summary
Rent arrears have cost Otto his flat, and he works them off doing jobs for the caretaker of the building. He is also trying to cure two animals: a dog that will not bite and a cat with suicidal tendencies. Then Gaby, the woman from his dreams, moves into the house, and Otto falls for her at once. Her interest lies with Amboss, a bodybuilder whose muscles are steel and whose brain is rubber. Otto is not well built and not attractive. Winning her attention is what he sets out to do, and body-building competitions are how he goes about it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Otto - Der Neue Film (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Product placement was unusually heavy for its time: Otto Waalkes skates past posters for Bauknecht, Levi's and Jever, the OTTO mail-order slogan "Otto … find' ich gut" appears on a mirror and on his T-shirt, and for the ZDF broadcast the red-and-white Marlboro cigarette packs were recoloured green-and-white by video processing.
- The song Otto skates to, "Like Ice in the Sunshine" by Beagle Music Ltd. from 1986, still serves as the advertising song for the ice-cream maker Langnese and was covered for that purpose by several well-known performers.
