Plot summary
Badrinath Bansal, known as Badri, grows up in Jhansi as the youngest son of a rich household, where his father Ambar decides how his children will live. Badri's elder brother Alok is in love with another woman but gives her up after Ambar suffers a heart attack, and he now drinks heavily in his arranged marriage to Urmila, who is not permitted to work although she is qualified. Badri fears the same fate for himself. At a wedding he meets Vaidehi Trivedi, a well educated woman with career plans of her own, and decides to marry her with his father's approval. She turns him down. When Badri helps her elder sister Kritika's wedding take place and settles a dowry dispute, Vaidehi agrees to marry him.

- For Badrinath Ki Dulhania, "Tamma Tamma Again" was recreated from Bappi Lahiri's "Tamma Tamma" for the 1990 film Thanedaar, and that original was itself based on "Tama" and "Yé ké yé ké" from Mory Kanté's 1987 album Akwaba Beach.
- The film's title track, "Badri Ki Dulhania", appears to be inspired by "Chalat Musafir" from the 1966 film Teesri Kasam, a song that was itself inspired by a Bihari folk song.
