Plot summary
Sarah Jones, a model in London, is found dead with her back whipped, tears drawn on her face, her neck broken and the index finger of her right hand cut away. Commissioner Douglas of the Metropolitan Police sees the same pattern as in the victims of a serial killer who went quiet three years earlier. DCI Lisa Verma asks for Amar Singh, the former detective who left the force after failing to catch that killer and now teaches architecture at Oxford. He refuses at first, still carrying scars from the case, then agrees to rejoin and take up Operation Mayfair. Sonia Kapoor, the in-house profiler who worked with him before, joins the inquiry, and every victim so far has been between 25 and 30.
