Plot summary
Suzuko Sato, twenty-one, works part-time at a restaurant and lives at home with her parents and Takuya Sato, her younger brother. Her coworker Riko suggests they share an apartment, and Suzuko agrees. Riko mentions that her boyfriend Takeshi Hamada will live there too, and Suzuko arrives to find the couple has already split, leaving her alone with Takeshi. Suzuko brings home a kitten from a cardboard box. While she is out buying food, Takeshi gets rid of it, and Suzuko finds the animal dead. She throws his belongings out of the apartment and leaves. Takeshi has her charged with property damage, and she pays a 200,000 yen fine. Back home, Takuya protests that her record will harm his entrance exams, and the neighbors gossip. Suzuko tells her family she will move out once she has saved one million yen.
