Stephen Lewis was born on December 17, 1926 in Poplar, London, England. He was an actor and writer, known for Last of the Summer Wine (1973), On the Buses (1969) and Holiday on the Buses (1973). He died on August 12, 2015 in Wanstead, London.

About the name
In his early stage career, Stephen Lewis went by the surname Cato. After he wrote Sparrows Can't Sing, his agent pushed him to use his real name instead.
A change of course
Lewis joined the Merchant Navy and also did carpentry, electrical work and bricklaying before he became an actor. A Theatre Workshop performance, staged by its director Joan Littlewood, convinced him to attend.
Getting ready for a role
Lewis was only 42 when On the Buses began, and heavy make-up was used to make him look much older than his actual age.
Behind the camera
Lewis wrote Sparrers Can't Sing with the Theatre Workshop in 1960, and it was made into the 1963 film Sparrows Can't Sing, in which he also appeared.
First role
Lewis made his West End theater debut in 1958, with the transfer of Brendan Behan's The Hostage to the West End.
