Plot summary
Lonnie lives with her parents and her little sister Diane in an upscale townhouse on New York's Lower East Side. Karen, a teenager, lives on the same street in a working-class, devoutly Catholic household; her father is the superintendent of their apartment building, and her older brother Johnny hangs out with the neighborhood kids. One summer day Lonnie sees Karen and Johnny with those kids, and the two girls strike up a friendship. Lonnie is impressionable and drawn to Karen's older age and street-smarts, and she begins to skip day camp to spend time with Karen. Karen tries to blend in with the social world Lonnie belongs to.
