John Loder
Biography
John Loder was a British actor who built his career in German and British films before moving to the United States in 1928 to work in talkies. Born in London in 1898, he began acting in Berlin with the British Theatre Guild and won success in plays such as The Last of Mrs Cheyney and Loyalties. He appeared in German films including Dancing Mad and Madame Wants No Children before taking supporting parts in Britain, notably The First Born. In Hollywood he worked for Paramount and other studios, then returned to Britain, where he specialized in leading man roles. His films included The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage (1936), How Green Was My Valley (1941), Now, Voyager (1942), Gentleman Jim (1942), Old Acquaintance (1943), Passage to Marseille (1944), and Dishonored Lady (1947). Later credits included Gideon's Day (1958) and The Firechasers (1971), and he published an autobiography, Hollywood Hussar, in 1977. He died in 1988.

After he left the cavalry, Loder went into business with Walter Becker, a friend from Germany, and they established a pickle factory in Potsdam.
First role
Loder began his screen career in bit parts in German films made at the Tempelhof Film Studios, including Dancing Mad in 1925.

Loder also took a role onstage on Broadway, appearing in the 1947 production For Love or Money opposite June Lockhart.

In the early 1940s Loder hosted Silver Theater, a dramatic anthology program on CBS radio, and starred in its June 11, 1944 episode.
