Plot summary
William Porter works as a wheeltapper until a mistake costs him the job. Family connections then give him the post of stationmaster at a rundown station in Northern Ireland, close to the border with the Irish Free State. His co-workers are Harbottle, the elderly deputy stationmaster, and Albert, a young porter. The two steal goods in transit and swap railway tickets for food. They tell Porter about earlier stationmasters who died or vanished, which they blame on a ghost.

- Jimmy Perry wrote in his autobiography that the characters Captain Mainwaring, Corporal Jones and Private Pike in Dad's Army were inspired by watching Oh, Mr Porter!
- The ancient steam locomotive Gladstone was portrayed by No. 2 Northiam, a 2-4-0T built by Hawthorn Leslie in 1899 and loaned to the film by the Kent and East Sussex Railway. It went back to the company and was scrapped in 1941.
- Although Oh, Mr Porter! is set in Northern Ireland, none of it was filmed there: the station at Buggleskelly was the disused Cliddesden railway station on the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway, closed to goods in 1936.
- The Will Hay Appreciation Society unveiled a memorial bench to Will Hay, Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt in October 2018 at Cliddesden, Hampshire, where Buggleskelly was filmed. Pete Waterman unveiled it.
