Plot summary
Charlie has cataplexy. Strong emotion, joy in particular, makes him faint, so he works at a quiet job as a Brooklyn librarian and shares an apartment with his brother, Cooper, keeping his life calm by denying himself pleasure. Then Francesca, the free-spirited niece of Sylvia, comes into the library, and Charlie falls in love. Because of his condition, he steps aside and matches her with Cooper instead. The techniques Charlie has built to hold his emotions in check are tested with Francesca nearby. The story comes from a true account first told on the radio program This American Life.
