Plot summary
Helen Matthews is a widow, still grieving her husband James, who died in October when a storm caught him. Against her son's wishes, she goes alone to the island cottage she and James kept, a place reachable only by boat. A trip for groceries ends when her boat's engine fails, and marine staff promise to repair it in a few days. On her second night, thunder wakes her. A skiff is tied at her pier, with blood on its rear seat, and there is blood on her cabin door handle. Inside she finds a stranger, Will, shot in the shoulder. Helen is a doctor, and she removes the pistol round and tends the wound. The next day Will will not say who shot him and insists on leaving, but he is too weak.
