Plot summary

Tanai is a young Tuamutu fisherman who lives on a coral atoll in Polynesia. He sets out for the distant archipelagos to obtain fertile soil for a breadfruit tree, which his people take as a symbol of survival. He makes the crossing aboard a tiny, fragile raft, out into the vast South Pacific. Storms and rushing tides meet him on the way, and thirst and hunger wear him down. Voices of his ancestors guide him. The voyage carries him to the far corners of the world, to Easter Island and its ancient sculptures, and he battles mud people in the Philippines.
