Plot summary
In Jerusalem, Ben's family keeps pressing him to marry, and he agrees to a journey that will put distance between them. The Jewish community of Alexandria, once the largest in the world, is now so small that it cannot gather the ten men needed for the Passover ceremonies, and Ben, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, is to be the tenth. He sets out for Egypt, misses his flight, and ends up on a bus into the Sinai, where he is put off in the desert. There he meets Adel, a Bedouin whose camel has gone missing, and the two continue together across the desert.
