Plot summary
Nitram is an intellectually disabled young man who lives in Tasmania with his mother and father. His fireworks upset the neighbors, and he sells them to schoolchildren. His father has been approved for a loan toward a bed and breakfast where Nitram would help out, and his mother turns down his request for a surfboard. Nitram begins mowing lawns and gets to know Helen, a retired actress and heiress who pays him for walking her dogs. Her spare room becomes his home, on the condition that he give up his air rifle.

- The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, set up by Walter Mikac, whose wife and two young daughters were murdered in the Port Arthur massacre, condemned the decision to make the film, as did Kelly Spaulding, mayor of the Tasman Council that includes Port Arthur.
- Only two cinemas in all of Tasmania screened the film, the Star Theatre in Launceston and the State Cinema in Hobart, and the State Cinema chose not to advertise the screenings.
- Screen Tasmania declined to fund the film and then-premier Peter Gutwein told the House of Assembly it made him uncomfortable, while arts minister Elise Archer declined the production company's invitation to meet.
