Plot summary
The Wessex Hotel is a Victorian building in Los Angeles, put up in 1898 and standing sixteen floors high, with a thirteenth floor among them. In its early years, the serial killer Avery Block took his friends to that floor and killed them with a fire ax, hoping to gain immortality by taking other people's lives. The murders led the hotel to seal the floor off in October 1901, and a frieze went up around the building to cover it. Ninety years later, the magazine Traveler's Review sends its travel writer, Elaine Kalisher, to Los Angeles to write about the place.
