Plot summary
A flat tire strands Cathy and Diane, two UCLA students on a summer drive across the country, outside a small Southern town. A local man, George, fits the spare, and Sheriff Slim Danen is standoffish toward them. At a diner, while the car waits for a new fuel pump, they rebuff him again. That night the sheriff arrests them for trespassing and takes them to the county jail, and at their hearing the local judge orders them to pay for the repairs, a bill they dispute. Diane tells the judge the sheriff raped her. The women are sent to Badham County Farm for thirty days. Superintendent Dancer and the guards Dulcie, Smitty and Greer run the farm, where the residence halls are racially segregated. A longtime inmate, Sara, looks after Diane.

- When Nightmare in Badham County premiered in China it became a monster hit, with an estimated 150 million people going to see it. Its star, Deborah Raffin, became the first American movie star to make a publicity tour of the country.
- Seven ABC affiliates refused to air the film because it was, in their words, excessively violent. WAST-TV in Albany said it had an obligation to determine what is violence for violence's sake, and WCVB-TV in Boston cited Boston's school-integration racial tension along with the film's violence and rape.
- Nude footage and catfights were filmed for the film's European theatrical release, and executive producer Douglas Cramer said that material was meant for the overseas market and would not be shown in the United States. He added that he did not approve of or condone it.
