Plot summary
Six years ago Janet Freeman's mother stabbed her father to death and was committed to an asylum. Janet is now a pupil at a finishing school, where nightmares give her no peace. Her teacher, Mary Lewis, takes her to the family home while her guardian, Henry Baxter, is away. The chauffeur, John, and the housekeeper, Mrs. Gibbs, meet them there, along with Grace Maddox, a nurse-companion Henry has hired. Miss Lewis leaves Janet in Grace's care. In the house the nightmares continue. A woman in a white shroud roams the corridors and urges Janet into her parents' room, where the same figure lies with a knife in her chest. Henry comes back to a sedated Janet.
