Plot summary
Barbara and her brother Johnny are visiting their mother's grave in a rural Pennsylvania cemetery. An elderly funeral director stumbles past them with blood on his forehead and runs off. A zombie attacks; Johnny is killed, and Barbara flees to a farmhouse that looks abandoned. Ben, who escaped Evans City, arrives and helps her finish off the undead inside. As night falls they board up the doors and windows, then discover they are not alone. Harry and Helen Cooper and their daughter Sarah have been sheltering in the basement with teenagers Tom and Judy Rose. The survivors disagree about what to do. Harry wants to wait below for the authorities, Ben calls the basement a trap and would rather hold the house, and Barbara proposes walking away, since the zombies move slowly. The hammering draws a crowd of the dead.

- Tom Savini, making his feature directorial debut, called the production "the worst nightmare of my life": only forty percent of his ideas made it into the final film, and with George A. Romero absent from the set he clashed with producers who would not let him explore his vision.
- To avoid an X rating, Tom Savini had to cut several scenes from Night of the Living Dead, and he blamed those cuts for the film's lack of popularity among horror fans.
- The special effects team kept the gore restrained out of respect for the 1968 original and drew on a real autopsy, forensic pathology textbooks and Nazi death camp footage for realism; Savini wanted the film to stay artistic despite his "king of splatter" reputation.
- The 1990 Night of the Living Dead is the only official remake of George A. Romero's 1968 film; unofficial remakes followed because the source material lacked copyright ownership and had fallen into the public domain.
- A lengthy court battle over the rights to the 1968 original, plus an oversight that left out the copyright notice, meant George A. Romero saw little profit; his company Image Ten won the lawsuit, but the distributor went out of business before they could collect.
