Plot summary
A widowed woman named Thelma Cates shares her house with her middle-aged daughter, Jessie. One evening Jessie tells her calmly and without fuss that she intends to end her own life before the night is out. She delivers the news while she goes on putting household items in order and getting ready to do her mother's nails. Thelma remains with her, and the two of them spend the night talking in the house they share. Over those hours Jessie explains why she has come to this decision and how much of the planning she has already carried out for her own death.
