Plot summary
Marcus comes back to his Philadelphia neighborhood in 1976 after years away, part of them in prison on gun running charges, to bury his father. Word in the neighborhood says he named a fellow Panther's hiding place, and the man died when police came for him. His former friend DoRight, now a local gangster, and his brother Bostic, a Black Muslim, keep their distance. Patricia, whose husband led the neighborhood Panthers and was killed in the house where she still lives, works as a lawyer and raises her daughter Iris. Her cousin Jimmy takes odd jobs and grows angrier at the police. Patricia invites Marcus to stay with her, saying he will be a good influence on Iris.
